"A New Leash on Life"
“A New Leash on Life” is a program that allows minimum and medium custody state prisons to partner with local animal shelters, animal welfare agencies, and/or private non-profit agencies to train dogs in preparation for their adoption. In turn, the inmates are given a chance to serve the community by training dogs to be well-behaved pets.
Each prison facility partners with a local partner or sponsor, a volunteer animal trainer, and local merchants or civic organizations that can support the program with needed supplies and services. Selected dogs are placed with inmate trainers in a prison setting for eight to twelve weeks. The inmates teach basic obedience, house training, and socialization through positive reinforcement and repetition. Dogs are taught to walk on and off the leash and to respond to basic commands. “A New Leash on Life” operates at these facilities. For more information on adoption of the dogs, please contact the participating community partners.
Liust being currently updated.
Amazingly enough, they partner with 20+ prisons!

The Rutherford County Humane Society Feral Cat Program & Pet Adoptions
Rutherford County Humane Society
P.O. Box 998 Rutherfordton, NC 28139 Phone 828-286-0222
What is the RCHS Feral Cat Program? In Rutherford County, we have an abundant feral cat population. Our RCHS uses TNR (Trap/Neuter/Return) to deal with this problem. We have various means of trapping, tailoring our approach to the individual colony. We transport the trapped cats in carriers to several local veterinarians. The cats are surgically sterilized, given rabies and PVR shots and flea treatment, and ear-tipped.
By removing the tip of one ear (left ear for males, right for females), we are able to mark the cat for later identification as a cat that is sterile and vaccinated. Female cats are sutured with "super glue" rather than conventional stitches so that they are free to go the day after surgery. We return all cats to their original colony location unless we find that a tame, adoptable cat is in the group.
Also, see our loving pets for adoptions. Dogs & Cats on link above.

STAR 970 Rabbit Skin Rd. Waynesville, NC 28785 Phone 828-400-4940
Jim and Karen Owens moved to Waynesville, NC in 2005 and fell in love with all it had to offer. They soon learned that Haywood County loved horses, too. In 2005, Jim & Karen Owens opened up their farm for horses and goats to have a place to be until they can be adopted. There just wasn’t room for those in need at the animal shelter! Sometimes a hoofed animal requires a little extra care and this is a place where he/she can find just that until a forever home is found. Triangle Beagle Rescue, Tribeagles.org is conducting a shoe drive fundraiser beginning on June 15, 2017 to raise funds for vet bills.
